What tradespeople earn in Uganda — and why the price you are quoted varies so much
Why two quotes for the same job can differ several times over, how fundis actually price work, and how to compare quotes without just picking the cheapest.

This is the question we are asked most: what should this cost? We are not going to publish a price list we cannot stand behind. Kazi Fundi has not yet run enough real jobs to publish verified market rates, and inventing them would be worse than useless. What we can do is explain honestly how pricing works, so you can read a quote properly.
Four things that move a price
- Materials. In many trades most of the quote is pipe, cable, cement, paint or parts — not labour. A quote that seems high may simply include better materials.
- Travel. Getting from Nansana to Muyenga on a working day costs real time and fuel. Distance is priced whether or not it is itemised.
- Urgency. Same-day and Sunday work costs more everywhere in the world, and Kampala is no exception.
- Risk. If a fundi has been burned by non-payment, that risk is quietly built into the number you are given.
Why the same job gets wildly different quotes
With nearly nine in ten Ugandan workers operating informally 1, there is no published rate card and no professional body setting fees for most trades. Each fundi prices from experience, from what the last customer paid, and from a quick read of you. That last part is uncomfortable but true: an unfamiliar accent or a big gate changes the opening number.
The fix is not haggling harder. It is making quotes comparable — same job description, same scope, several quotes side by side, from people whose past work you can see.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask every fundi to split materials from labour. If one quote is all-in and another is labour-only, you are not comparing anything.
- Confirm what happens if the job runs over. Fixed price, or day rate?
- Agree the date and time in writing, not just "tomorrow".
- Ask what is guaranteed and for how long — a week of cover on a repair is normal and worth paying for.
- Treat the cheapest quote with the same suspicion as the most expensive one.
Paying safely
Full payment up front is how most disputes start. A deposit that covers materials, with the balance on completion, protects both sides — the fundi is not funding your job out of pocket, and you keep leverage until the work is finished. On Kazi Fundi the deposit is paid by mobile money and held until you confirm the job is done.
What we will publish, and when
Once enough real jobs have gone through the platform, we will publish typical price ranges by trade and by area, based on completed jobs rather than guesses — clearly labelled with how many jobs each range is drawn from. Until then, any Ugandan price list you read online, including ours, should be treated as indicative only.
